Frequently Asked Questions

Dental Implants

Answers to the questions we hear most often from patients considering implants.

A dental implant is a small titanium post placed into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. Once it has healed and fused with the bone, a custom crown, bridge, or denture is attached on top, giving you a replacement tooth that looks, feels, and functions like a natural one.

Most healthy adults with adequate jawbone density are candidates. Factors like gum disease, uncontrolled diabetes, smoking, or significant bone loss can affect eligibility, but treatments such as bone grafting can often still make implants possible. A consultation and 3D scan will confirm whether implants are right for you.

The implant is placed under local anesthesia (or sedation, if preferred), so patients typically feel little to no discomfort during the procedure. Mild soreness or swelling for a few days afterward is normal and is usually managed well with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Placing the implant itself takes about an hour per tooth, but the full process — including healing and integration with the jawbone — generally spans 3 to 6 months before the final crown is attached. Some patients qualify for same-day or accelerated options depending on their bone health.
With proper care, implants can last 20-plus years — many for a lifetime. The titanium post itself rarely needs replacement; the crown on top may need eventual replacement after 10-15 years due to normal wear.
Implants are cared for just like natural teeth — brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and keeping up with regular checkups and cleanings. Good oral hygiene is the single biggest factor in long-term implant success.
Coverage varies widely by plan. Some dental insurance plans cover a portion of the cost, particularly the crown, while others classify implants as elective. Our team will review your benefits with you and walk through financing options if needed.
A single implant replaces one missing tooth. Full mouth implants (sometimes called All-on-4 or full arch restoration) use a small number of strategically placed implants — typically 4 to 6 per arch — to support a complete, fixed set of replacement teeth for patients missing most or all of their teeth.
